UNIXWARE(TM) LAN ADAPTER SUPPORT RELEASE NOTE ================================================================== ************************* ******URGENT NOTICE****** ******************************************************************* THIS DRIVER IS NOT SUPPORTED BY 3COM OR BY NOVELL'S UNIX SYSTEMS GROUP. NOVELL DOES NOT SUPPORT THE PCMCIA OR PC-CARD BUS IN UNIXWARE. SO, WHILE THIS DRIVER IS BASED ON THE SAME CERTIFIED CODE THAT WAS SHIPPED WITH UNIXWARE 1.X FOR THE 3C509/3C579/3C529 ADAPTERS, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CERTIFY THE PCMCIA VERSION FOR SUPPORT FROM NOVELL. FURTHER, 3COM'S CUSTOMER SUPPORT DIVISION IS NOT TRAINED OR EXPERIENCED IN THE UNIXWARE OPERATING SYSTEM. DESPITE THESE LIMITATIONS, WE ARE MAKING THIS DRIVER AVAILABLE DUE TO THE GREAT DEMAND FROM CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE ASSURED US THEY ARE WILLING TO USE IT AT THEIR OWN RISK. ALTHOUGH WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE ANY USER SUPPORT, WE DO APPRECIATE INFORMATION FROM CUSTOMERS WHO FEEL THEY MAY HAVE ENCOUNTERED A BUG IN THIS DRIVER. PLEASE SEND A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF YOUR CONFIGURATION AND SYMPTOMS VIA E-MAIL TO TERRY_MURPHY@3MAIL.3COM.COM OR VIA FAX TO TERRY MURPHY AT 408-764-6897. ******************************************************************* 3Com EtherLink III Driver Package This driver software package includes support for the following 3Com EtherLink III Parallel Tasking Ethernet adapters: Adapter Bus Cable Types ----------- ----- ----------- 3C509 ISA coax, AUI 3C509-TP ISA TP, AUI 3C509-COMBO ISA coax, TP, AUI 3C509B ISA coax, AUI 3C509B-TP ISA TP, AUI 3C509B-COMBO ISA coax, TP, AUI 3C579 EISA coax, AUI 3C579-TP EISA TP, AUI 3C529 MCA coax, AUI 3C529-TP MCA TP, AUI 3C589 PCMCIA TP, coax 3C589B PCMCIA TP, coax All EtherLink III adapters connect your PC to an Ethernet network. The meanings of the cable types mentioned above are as follows: coax - 802.3 10Base2 coaxial cable TP - 802.3 10Base-T twisted-pair cable AUI - for connection to an external 802.3 transceiver If the 3C579 adapter is installed, ensure that the configuration file has been loaded and the board is configured using the EISA Configuration Utility for the appropriate slot number where the board is installed. If the 3C529 adapter is installed, ensure that the configuration file has been loaded and the board is configured using the MCA Configuration Utility that comes on the Reference Disk supplied with the computer. The 3C579 and 3C529 configuration files are located on the 3Com EtherDisk for the EtherLink III Family diskette that comes with these adapter boards. This driver package operates with UnixWare Release 1.0 and Release 1.1 of the Application Server and the Personal Edition products. It is assumed that it will also operate with later versions of these products. LIMITATIONS This driver package cannot be used for network installations. It can only be installed as a software package after the Application Server or Personal Edition has been installed. This driver uses point-enabler technolgy to support the EtherLink III PCMCIA (3C589 and 3C589B) adapters and these boards are supported only in computers that use the Intel 82365SL PC CARD Interface Controller (PCIC) or 100% compatible as the PCMCIA contoller. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS This section provides step-by-step procedures for installing the driver package. In addition, pre-installation requirements have been provided: Note: If UnixWare has previously been configured for a different board, and you are installing an EtherLink III to be used as the first LAN card, then you will need to remove the Ethernet Hardware Support Package using the pkgrm command before attempting to install this driver package. 1. Create a special directory for the driver software package. 2. Place the file 5X9UW.A in this directory. Enter the following commands: uudecode 5X9UW.A (decodes the ASCII file to binary compressed, 5X9UW.Z) uncompress 5X9UW.Z (uncompresses 5X9UW.Z and changes name to 5X9UW) tar -xvf 5X9UW (extracts the necessary files from the tar archive 5X9UW) rm 5X9UW.A 5X9UW (we don't need these files any more) 3. Now, install the software package. Enter the following command (you need to be superuser (id=0)): pkgadd -d where is the complete path name of the directory created in step #1. 4. A brief message is displayed providing you with instructions for reading and exiting the LAN Adapter Release Notes screen. The release notes will be displayed next. At this time either press the key to continue paging through the release notes or enter "q" at the colon prompt to exit the view. After one of these two steps have been taken, the installation process will continue. 5. The Adapter Selection Menu screen will prompt for the number of boards to be configured of each bus type. 6. The Parameter Selection Menu screen will prompt for the interrupt vector by providing a list of available interrupt vectors. This screen is displayed on a per-board basis. The next field will prompt for either the I/O addresses for ISA, MCA, and PCMCIA adapters, or the slot # for EISA adapters. For EISA adapters, the I/O addresses are automatically configured from the slot number where the board has been installed. Next, the cable type selection field is displayed for ISA and PCMCIA adapters. For PCMCIA adapters, there is also a memory addresses selection. 8. Once the adapter selections have been made, the installation of the driver software will continue. Once the files have been installed, the installation process will send notice to the installer to shut the system down, and execute a reboot in order to rebuild the kernel, and incorporate the new changes. DEINSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Execute the following (you need to be superuser (id=0)): pkgrm el3 RESTRICTIONS The maximim number of adapters supported on a per system basis is 4. 3Com Corporation 5400 Bayfront Plaza Santa Clara, CA 95052 408-764-5000
